Do you know how to see a doctor in Canada, or what to do if you get sick? For newcomers, Canada’s healthcare system can be different from that in your home country. Here’s what you need to know to make the process simple and stress-free.
Healthcare in Canada is Publicly Funded
In Canada, basic healthcare is paid for through taxes. This means you do not pay directly when you visit a doctor or go to a hospital for covered services. However, you must have a health card from your province or territory to use these services. In some provinces, there is a waiting period before your coverage starts, so it is a good idea to get private health insurance for that time. There is no waiting period for coverage in Ontario and Newfoundland.
Getting Your Health Card
Each province and territory manages its own healthcare system. If you live in Ontario, you will apply for an Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card. To get your card, you need to meet specific eligibility criteria and provide documents such as proof of identity, immigration papers, and proof of address. Once you receive a health card, we recommend that you always carry it in case of emergencies.
Finding a Family Doctor
In Canada, a family doctor is usually your first point of contact for healthcare. They can treat you for common problems, provide check-ups, and refer you to specialists if needed. You can search online, ask friends, or use government resources to find a doctor accepting new patients. If you do not have a family doctor, you can visit a walk-in clinic for non-emergency care.
Emergency Department
Hospitals have emergency departments for serious or life-threatening problems, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or broken bones. If it is not an emergency, go to your family doctor or a clinic instead. This helps keep emergency rooms available for those who need urgent help.
Prescription Medications
While doctor visits are covered by public healthcare, most prescription drugs are not free. Some provinces offer programs to help with the cost, especially for children, seniors, and low-income families. You can also get private health insurance to help pay for medicines, dental care, and vision care.
