How Libraries Help Newcomers Settle in Canada

Posted by: NIC Online Date: June 14, 2025 Category: Blog

Moving to a new country can feel overwhelming. There is much to learn, from new systems to a new way of life. But did you know that your local library can help you?

Libraries Are Free and Open to Everyone

In Canada, access to public libraries is free. All you need is a library card. You can get one by visiting your local branch and showing your ID and proof of address. Each city has a different library system, so be sure to get a new card if you move.

With a library card, you can access many helpful services at no cost.

What Can You Do at the Library?

Libraries offer much more than just books. Here are some things you can enjoy:

  • Borrow books, movies, and music for free.
  • Improve your English with books, audiobooks, and free language classes.
  • Use computers and the internet, or connect your own device to free Wi-Fi for job searches, writing resumes, or staying in touch with family.
  • Enhance your skills with free access to online learning platforms, such as LinkedIn, which offers courses in business, technology, and more.
  • Attend free workshops and programs, such as story time for children, career help, or citizenship classes.
  • Get help from friendly staff who can guide you to the right resources.

Many libraries also offer services in different languages and have materials for all ages.

A Community Resource

For newcomers, the library is a welcoming space where you can learn, grow, and connect. Many offer information sessions on housing, jobs, health care, legal rights, and other important topics when settling in a new country. Libraries also host multicultural events and newcomer meetups, where you can meet others, share experiences, and feel a part of your new community.

Whether you're looking for information, support, or a quiet place to study, the library is a great place to start.
