High five at a meeting.

Moving to Canada is a big step. You may feel proud and excited, but also tired, worried, or alone. Many newcomers feel this way. It’s not easy to start over in a new place. That’s why it’s so important to take care of your mental health as you adjust to your new life.

What Is Mental Health?

Mental health is about how you feel, think, and handle stress. Good mental health can help you enjoy life, make good choices, and build healthy relationships. Poor mental health can make daily life hard.

Promoting good mental health begins with self-care, which involves looking after your body, mind, and emotions. When you take care of yourself, you feel stronger and more hopeful.

Simple Ways to Take Care of Your Mental Health

  1. Talk to Someone: Sharing your thoughts can help you feel lighter and more understood. Talk to a friend, family member, or a support worker. You are not alone.
  2. Stay Active: Exercise helps your mind feel better. You don’t need to go to a gym or play sports. Simple activities like walking in a park or dancing in your room can help improve your mood.
  3. Eat Healthy and Sleep Well: Try to eat fresh food like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Drink water and avoid too much sugar or junk food. Try sleeping at the same time each night. Good sleep and healthy food will keep your body and mind strong.
  4. Make Time for Yourself: Do something you enjoy, like reading, listening to music, or drawing. Even a few minutes a day can help. Doing this can help you relax and recharge.
  5. Learn and Ask for Help: Ask for help when you need it. Many organizations help newcomers with finding a job, learning English, or understanding forms.
  6. Join Community Programs: Making friends and joining groups can help you feel connected. When you join a group, you learn from others and feel part of a community. This can make you feel less lonely and more supported.
