Welcome to Ontario! Getting around is an important part of settling in. Fortunately, Ontario has a reliable and affordable public transportation system that makes it easy to travel for work, school, or fun. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand public transit in Ontario.
Types of Public Transit
Ontario offers different types of transportation, including:
- Buses: Buses are common in all cities and towns. They are affordable and cover many routes, so you can get close to your destination.
- Trains and Subways: In large cities like Toronto, there are subway and train systems. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) operates the subway in Toronto, while GO Transit provides regional trains to connect different cities.
- Streetcars and Light Rail: You’ll also find streetcars in Toronto, which run on tracks like a train track on the road, and light rail systems in cities like Ottawa and Kitchener-Waterloo.
Regional Transit Systems
Each region in Ontario may have its public transit system with unique routes and fare structures. Here are some of the main ones:
- Toronto (TTC): The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) operates buses, streetcars, and subways within Toronto.
- York Region (YRT/Viva): The York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva bus systems serve communities north of Toronto.
- Mississauga (MiWay): MiWay buses connect residents in Mississauga and surrounding areas.
- Brampton (Brampton Transit): Brampton Transit operates buses across the city, including the Züm Bus Rapid Transit service for fast travel along major routes.
- Ottawa (OC Transpo): Ottawa’s OC Transpo includes buses and the O-Train, which is a light rail system.
- Hamilton (HSR): The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) operates buses in Hamilton.
Most of these systems are connected, making travel between regions easier.
How to Pay for Transit
While cash may be accepted on some systems, using a Presto Card is the recommended way for newcomers to pay for transit.
- PRESTO Card: You can use this card on many transit systems across Ontario, including TTC, GO Transit, and more. To use it, tap your PRESTO card on the reader when you get on the bus, train, or subway. You can buy a PRESTO card at major stations or online and add money to it at machines, online, or through a mobile app. Tip: If you are travelling on GO Transit, don't forget to tap off at your destination to ensure you are charged the correct fare.
- Exact Cash Fare: Some buses accept cash, but it’s best to check the transit website first. Be sure to have the exact amount, as drivers do not give change.
Planning Your Trip
Before you travel, check the route and schedule to know when and where to go. Here are some helpful tools:
- Transit Apps: Apps like Google Maps or Transit App can help you find bus and train schedules. Enter your destination, and they will show you the route and time.
- Transit Websites: Each transit system has a website where you can find maps, schedules, and fare information.
Tips for Easy Travel
Keep these tips in mind when travelling:
- Be Punctual: Buses and trains run on a schedule. Arriving 5-10 minutes early can help you avoid missing your ride.
- Ask for Help: Transit staff and drivers are usually helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you’re unsure.
