The 4 Steps of Career Exploration

Posted by: NIC Online Date: October 14, 2021 Category: Blog

Choosing the right career for you is an important decision that will influence your life. Undergoing the process of career exploration will help you make an informed decision and put you in a position to succeed.

Continue reading to learn more about the steps you can take when exploring careers.

Step 1: Self-assessment

Undergoing a self-assessment means that you reflect on your strengths and weaknesses. Understanding your personality will allow you to gain a better grasp of your career goals. Perform a self-assessment by thinking about your skills, interests, values, and preferred working style. In addition, consider which types of occupations or industries interest you. This step will help narrow down possible careers that will be a fit your personality.

Step 2: Research

The next step of career exploration is to research your short-list of preferred careers. Identify any hurdles that may prevent you from entering the job. Determine if Canadian employers will recognize your international credentials. You may need to have your credentials assessed so that Canadians understand the local equivalent of your education. Services such as WES and ICAS are your best choices if you require credential assessment. If local employers do not recognize your credentials, determine if you need additional education, training, or access to bridging programs to qualify for your desired career.

Lastly, determine if your desired career is regulated. Regulated jobs require individuals to be licensed before they can practice. Consult the National Occupation Classification to learn about important information and requirements about specific careers. If your desired profession is regulated, contact your local regulatory body to learn more about getting licensed.

Step 3: Decision Making

What is best for your current situation and your future? Consider what is important to you and how your preferred career can align with your expectations. In addition, consider other aspects of the job such as working hours, salary, accessibility, transportation, and professional growth opportunities. Make your decision when you are ready!

Step 4: Taking Action

It's time to take action and work towards making your goals a reality. Determine the specific steps you will need to take to get the job you want. For some, this may involve returning to school and upgrading their skills. Others may want to consider volunteering to gain some direct experience in Canada. Furthermore, networking with individuals in your field of work is highly worthwhile. For example, take advantage of using LinkedIn or attend in-person networking events to expand your circle. Every action you take should bring you closer to landing your dream job!
